Give a Dog a Bone: Blogs About Pets and Toys

Hello world! My name is Mary, and my dog is my best friend. His name is Bandit, and he's a spunky little rescue. He hates to be left alone, and I'll admit that he once broke through a screen, walked several miles to where I was, and sat outside the cafe waiting for me. Since I work from home and don't go out often, I spend a lot of time with him. However, in most cases, owners would need to crate train their dogs in those situations. Anyway, wherever you are in your relationship with your dog, I hope you find what you need in this blog. It's going to be a mixture of fun tips, ideas, and facts. Enjoy!

Three Types Of Vests Important For Your Gun Dog

If you're gearing up for your first hunt with your dog, you need to be well prepared. After months of training, you might feel that you are ready to head out into the field. However, it's a big step to take and one that requires you to have the right equipment. You might have spent many hours training your dog using whistles, and sent them chasing decoys in your backyard or in a local park, but once you get out into the marsh or woods, you need special equipment. One particular item that your dog needs to have is a proper vest. There are three types of vests you need to have on hand.

A Visibility Vest

A lightweight visibility vest is absolutely essential. Even if you are hunting alone, you cannot anticipate if there are going to be other hunting parties out there on the same day. You don't want your dog to get accidentally shot by another hunter who mistakes their movement for that of a rabbit or deer. These vests tend to be bright orange and can be draped over other vests (warming or cooling). They are similar in style to the sort of visibility vests you might have seen on construction workers or be wearing yourself.

A Cool Weather Vest

In the cool weather you need a vest that is designed to keep your dog's core body temperature warm.. These vests are especially important for wet hunting (marsh and pond areas) where your dog will be in the water. Some vests will have "grab handles" incorporated into the back so that you can easily lift the dog up and back into the boat. Look for a vest that is made out of a neoprene material as it will work well with wet weather. You don't want a heavy cotton vest that you might see sold in some pet shops. These are fine for walking your dog around the neighborhood, but when you are out in the marsh, it will get soaked and can actually make things worse for your dog.

Warm Weather Cooling Vest

If you are planning on hunting in the warm weather, and you live in an area where it can get incredibly hot, then these vests are absolutely essential. The way they work is by a process involving water evaporation. You wet the vest (by pouring water over it or submerging it in a pond or stream) and then wring it out. Then you put it on your dog and the evaporation will help cool them. This can help prevent your dog from getting heat exhaustion. Remember, it should be used as a supplement to their water bowl, not as a replacement.
