Give a Dog a Bone: Blogs About Pets and Toys

Hello world! My name is Mary, and my dog is my best friend. His name is Bandit, and he's a spunky little rescue. He hates to be left alone, and I'll admit that he once broke through a screen, walked several miles to where I was, and sat outside the cafe waiting for me. Since I work from home and don't go out often, I spend a lot of time with him. However, in most cases, owners would need to crate train their dogs in those situations. Anyway, wherever you are in your relationship with your dog, I hope you find what you need in this blog. It's going to be a mixture of fun tips, ideas, and facts. Enjoy!

Dog Owners, Follow These Tips To Deal With Springtime Shedding

Amber Knight

When spring rolls around, dog owners everywhere cringe as their homes become covered in hair. Shedding season is a real challenge. But you don't have to go into the fur-magedon unarmed and unprepared! Here are four smart ways dog owners can deal with shedding season.

Brush Your Dog Daily

The secret to staying ahead of the game with shedding is to brush your dog every single day, even on days when not a lot of fur seems to be coming off. It's easier to remove a little hair a day than to remove big clumps of hair once a week. Instead of a brush, invest in a grooming glove, such as Hands On Gloves. These gloves slip right onto your hand, and they include nubs that grab onto the dog's hair as you brush. It's easier to get delicate areas, like behind the legs and along the bottom of your dog's tummy, when you use a grooming glove rather than a grooming brush.

Buy a Better Vacuum

Vacuums are not all created equal. Some have better brushes, so they reach down into the carpet and loosen up the pet hair rather than just passing over it. Look for a vacuum that is advertised for pet owners. Always lower the brush so that it actually moves through the carpet fibers. If the vacuum is very hard to push, then the vacuum is set too low. If the brush is not turning at all, it's too high. You may need to adjust the brush height as you move from room to room if you have several types of carpet. Vacuum two or three times a week during shedding season to keep the hair under control.

Wash With Moisturizing Shampoo

If you give your dog a bath during shedding season -- and you should at least once -- use a moisturizing shampoo. This will keep your dog's skin from getting so dry, so that he does not lose quite as much hair. The moisture will also prevent your dog's skin from releasing quite as many oils, so when your dog does lose hair, it does not has as much of a doggy odor.

Stay Away From Black Clothing

If you like wearing black, you'll just have to accept that this is not the season for it. Hair is a lot less obvious on patterned materials, so opt for patterned pants and shirts during the spring until your dog's shedding subsides.
